Reflexology Map
The whole foot is worked systematically, following the map
About
Foot reflexology massage is based on the idea that specific areas of the feet relate to different parts of the body. Its roots are traced to Far Eastern and ancient Egyptian traditions, and in its modern form it treats the whole foot like a "map". Following this map, your therapist works systematically over the soles, toes and heels with thumb pressure, finishing with the calves.
What happens during the session?
- Foot bath: Your feet rest for about 10 minutes in a warm bath with aromatic salts and essential oils.
- Warm-up: After drying with a warm towel, the feet are warmed with gentle strokes.
- Working the map: Following the reflexology map, thumb pressure is applied to specific points from the toes to the heel. By tradition, the toes are linked with the head, the middle of the sole with the internal organs and the heel with the pelvic area.
- Closing: The calves and ankles are worked, followed by herbal tea.
There are two options, 30 and 50 minutes. The pressure is firm; some points may feel more sensitive and the pressure is adjusted to your preference.
Reflexology is not a medical diagnosis or treatment; it is offered as a relaxing wellbeing treatment.
Who is it for?
It suits people who stand all day, anyone whose feet are tired after long walks or hard exercise, and those who do not have time for a full-body massage but want a short, deep rest. As only the feet and calves are worked on, it is a practical choice.
When to be careful
- Pregnancy, especially the first three months (consult your doctor)
- Wounds, fungal infections, verrucas or a recent sprain on the foot
- A gout attack or painful swelling in the foot or ankle
- Loss of sensation from diabetes (neuropathy) or circulation problems
- Varicose veins in the legs or a history of blood clots
Reflexology or another massage?
- Spot Massage: with the legs option, a 30-minute session that works on the whole leg after a day on your feet.
- Shiatsu Massage: an oil-free Japanese technique that works pressure points across the whole body along the meridian lines.
- Shiroabhyanga Massage: a similarly short Ayurvedic session at the other end of the body, focused on the head, neck and shoulders.
After your session
- Your feet may feel light and warm; sit and rest for a few minutes.
- Make sure you drink water through the day.
- Choose comfortable shoes rather than tight ones straight after your session.
About Foot Reflexology Massage
What is reflexology?
Reflexology is a pressure technique based on the idea that specific areas of the feet (and, in some approaches, the hands and ears) relate to different parts of the body. During the session your therapist applies thumb pressure to points on the feet following a reflexology map. It is not a medical diagnosis or treatment; it is offered as a relaxing wellbeing treatment.
Should I choose 30 or 50 minutes?
The 30-minute session is a short break that focuses on the soles, toes and heels after the foot bath. The 50-minute option works the map in more detail and gives more time to the calves; for a complete rest, we recommend 50 minutes.
Does foot reflexology hurt or tickle?
Because the pressure is firm and steady, it usually does not tickle. Some points may feel more sensitive than others; tell your therapist as soon as you are uncomfortable and the pressure will be adjusted straight away.
Can I have foot reflexology while pregnant?
Reflexology is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first three months. If you are pregnant, please consult your doctor and let us know before your appointment.
How long does a Foot Reflexology Massage session take?
A Foot Reflexology Massage session takes 30 or 50 minutes. You can choose the duration that suits you when booking.
Who is Foot Reflexology Massage suitable for?
Foot Reflexology Massage is suitable for those who stand all day, weary-footed professionals, those looking for a short but deep rest and guests after yoga or sport. Please let us know before your appointment if you are pregnant, have had recent surgery or have a chronic condition.
Which areas does Foot Reflexology Massage focus on?
The treatment focuses on foot soles, toes, heels and calves. You can agree your priority areas with your therapist at the start of the session.
What is included in a Foot Reflexology Massage session?
